VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Community Emergency Response Team

Disasters can happen at anytime and the government may not be able to meet the needs of the community immediately, but there is something that community members can do about it.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency began promoting nationwide use of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) concept in 1994. Since then CERT's have been established in hundreds of communities.

CERT training promotes a partnering effort between emergency services and the people that they serve. The goal is for emergency personnel to train members of neighborhoods, community organizations or workplaces in basic response skills. CERT members are then integrated into the emergency response capability for their area and community.

In the event of a disaster, CERT members can assist others by applying the basic response and organizational skills they have learned during training. These skills can help save and sustain lives following a disaster and daily emergencies.

The class room and hands-on training spread over a nine week period will consist of basic first aid, fire extinguishment, and response skills which will help save and sustain lives during a disaster and daily emergencies. This training is provided free of charge by qualified instructors from all of the emergency service organizations of Middlesex. Once trained, the CERT members will be assigned as an extension of the Office of Emergency Management of Middlesex Borough. No experience is necessary. Must be 18 years of age or older.
